This is a full-length novel written by Yu Hua in 1995 and the story is set in 1950s and 1960s' China. It tells the blood selling of Xu Sanguan, a cart-pusher in a silk mill. He sold blood to have a wife, cure his seriously ill son, entertain the honored guest, escape from death and survive, and more importantly, for the sake of love and ridiculous dignity. The novel is a vivid portrayal of Chinese life, and Yu Hua illustrates the absurdity of society in a humorous way. He creates a group of small potatoes who have wild life desires and can stick to dignity and unite as one at critical moments. It is an outstanding work incisively and vividly depicting the world view, outlook on life and values (sanguan in Chinese) of Chinese civilians.
